Mosquitoes, and How I Hate Them

So, we live in Georgia, the heart of the South.  It’s May.  Yes, mosquitoes are a problem.  I hate them.  I don’t want to go spraying my yard down with harsh chemicals because of the kids or the dog, and I vaguely remembered this mentioned somewhere and I thought I would try it.

Mosquitoes don’t like the scent of lemons or citrus, which is why citronella works, right?  I can’t go burning candles or tiki torches, either.  That’s just asking for trouble.  Plants aren’t going to work either ’cause I’ll just kill them.  (I did not inherit my mother’s green thumb, sadly.)

So, I got a sprayer attachment for my garden hose that I think I bought in the automotive section at Wal-mart.  You add soap to it and it mixes with the water, yadda yadda yadda.  This is sooo simple.  LEMON DISH SOAP.

Yes, that’s right.  Just cheap ol’ plain lemon dish soap.  It doesn’t even need to be the “good” kind.  Just the cheap generic buck-a-bottle stuff that is pretty much worthless for washing dishes.  Spray stuff down a little bit and you’re done.  If you are going to water the lawn, do that first, then spray your soap or you’ll wash it all away.  I hose down the yard and the bushes and the patio in the back yard and I don’t see a single mosquito.  Until it rains, then I have to do it again, which is now.  *scratches a fresh bite*

Good Intentions

So, I’ve decided that I’m getting fat.  I weigh the same as I did the day before Aby was born.  This is not good.  I’m definitely not going to start a diet, I can’t really do that because I’m still breastfeeding.  However, I am going to start off slowly getting a little more exercise at a time, whenever I can.  I can’t afford to be stiff and sore, so I’m just going to do a tiny bit at a time, working my way up slowly.

So, I got down on the floor with Aby, put her on my belly resting her back on my legs and did a few crunches.  Then I laid her on the floor, bent over her and did a few leg lifts.  Kaylee was very interested in what I was doing, she wanted to brush my hair while I was lying on the floor and then brought me her “trumpet” to play while I was doing leg lifts.

Maybe I’ll crank up some Lady Gaga in a little bit and dance around with Kaylee, since she LOVES Lady Gaga.

So, my intentions are good, let’s see if I can keep it up for a little bit.  Wish me luck.

Crock Pot Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

This is the “baked” kind of mac-n-cheese, not the creamy kind.  Also, this recipe can easily be doubled for a bigger crowd.

8 oz package macaroni (I like spiral pasta, the cheese sinks into the ridges so nicely)

1 large can of evaporated milk

1 1/2 cups milk

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

1 cup medium cheddar cheese, shredded

1/2 cup margarine or butter, cut into tablespoon-sized chunks

2 eggs

pepper, to taste

Cook macaroni according to package instructions (don’t forget the salt or it’ll taste nasty) and drain. Mix everything together in a large bowl.  Grease crock pot with a little butter or margarine or spray with cooking spray.  Pour into the crock pot.  Optional: sprinkle on more cheese on the top, because who doesn’t like more cheese?  Cook on low for 3 1/2 to 4 hours (or cook on high for 1 hour, then low for 1 – 1 1/2 hours).  Don’t leave it on high for the whole time, or it’ll be burned to a crisp.  Enjoy!
